Film Composer John Barry
One of my favorite film composers is Great Britain's John Barry. Truly one of the greatest of all time, John Barry composed some of the most beautiful, emotional and memorable film scores and, if you think of the films he wrote for, you can't imagine the movie without his music. Just a few of the films he's written for include Dances With Wolves (Oscar winner), Out of Africa (Oscar winner), Goldfinger (he scored 10 of the James Bond films, including the arrangement for the actual James Bond theme), Born Free (Oscar winner), The Lion In Winter (Oscar winner), Midnight Cowboy and one of my favorites, Cry, The Beloved Country. Barry's melodies have moved me to tears numerous times and have been one of my biggest influences when I write music...specifically in the past 4 years as I've written my 2 albums and some of the underscore music cues I've worked on.
Here's 2 videos featuring this amazing man. 1st, this rare interview with him, describing his approach to some of his great scores.
2nd, here's John Barry conducting the iconic James Bond theme - incredible to watch him work and his arrangement of this piece of music became one of the recognizable pieces of music in the history of the art-form.
