Ennio Morricone
To me, a great movie is nothing without a great score. The best scores when heard, can immediately bring up the emotions and experience we had from seeing the film. Think “Jaws” or “Star Wars” or “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly”! I love film music. It has influenced my writing in a huge way, both on of my records and my current underscore writing. For me, the soundtrack from the amazing film “The Mission” brings up so many emotions and images…written by my all-time favorite, a genius of this art form - Ennio Morricone.
Maestro Morricone was Italian-born and wrote over 400 scores in his amazing career for some of the most iconic films ever made. He was indeed one of the most prolific and greatest composers of all time. Morricone was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and was also an Oscar winner, many times over.
Literally every time I hear the main theme for “The Mission”, I cry. It’s so beautiful, so illustrative and emotional. Below are two links to highlight this amazing artist. First, Ennio himself conducting the main theme for The Mission. 2nd, I had to include a clip from the movie…the ‘Penance’ scene featuring, arguably one of Robert De Niro’s best performances - amazing! Check out how important the music is to this scene. See this movie ASAP, if you haven’t already.
